Once again, the Peewee A2 hit the road on 10/1 and 10/2 completing the rest of their declaration schedule in St. Louis. The Spirit did well on the weekend going 2-1-1, earning 3 shutouts in the process.

Game 1 saw a goalie battle as the Spirit took on the Meramec Sharks. The Spirit were by far the better team but could not solve a hot goaltender for the Sharks. Cooper Pumphrey was up to the task in stopping all 9 Meramec shots in a 0-0 tie. Pumphrey earned a second straight shutout.

Frustrated by getting shutout in game 1, Springfield came out firing by scoring 4 goals in the first period in route to a 6-0 win against the Twin Bridges Lightning. 3:40 into the game Wyatt Wirth opened the scoring with a nice unassisted goal. With about 2 minutes left in the first period Aidan Pallohusky found John Brown in the high slot. Brown spun around and fired a backhand that the Lightning goalie never saw coming and made it 2-0. The last minute of the 1st period was a wild one and saw goals from the Spirit 8 seconds apart. First Wyatt Wirth off a feed from Gavin Loven, and then off the face-off Gage Robb maneuvered his way through the Lightning and netted his first goal of his SYHA career to make it 4-0. Pallohusky made it 5-0 in the 2nd with a nice backhand off passes from Brown and Will Peters. Wyatt Wirth completed his hat trick night in the 3rd with another unassisted goal. Cooper Pumphrey was sharp, especially in the early going as Twin Bridges carried the momentum early. Pumphrey finished with 11 saves for a third straight shutout.

Game 3 of the weekend clearly showed an experienced Spirit team when they shutout the Springfield Kings. The Kings only had 3 second year peewees compared to the Spirits 12. The Spirit scored early and often in an 8-0 performance. Leading the way were second year players Gavin Loven and Zahn Werner. Loven scored 2 goals and added an assist and Werner scored twice. Crystal Gettman got her first goal of the season off a pass from Will Peters and Cal Bussen. Peters went on to score a goal of his own off a pass from Gettman. In the second period, Bussen scored his first goal of the year with a screen shot from the point. Wyatt Wirth scored off passes from Brooks Kettering and Gavin Loven. Cooper Pumphrey again was strong for the Spirit as he continues his improvement. Another shutout making it 4 in a row for Pumphrey with 13 saves on 13 shots

Sunday afternoon was setup to be a good test for the Spirit who matched up against the Kirkwood Stars. The Stars scored three first period goals and hung on for a 3-2 win. Kirkwood scored off the first face-off of the game and put Springfield on their heels early. They would score again midway through the first to make it 2-0. Leading scorer Gavin Loven on a great individual effort skated through the neutral zone and into the Stars zone, cut across to the middle and hammered a slapshot home to put the Spirit on the board. Under 5 seconds left the Stars scored what turned out to be the game winner off a rebound out front to make it 3-1. In the second period the ice started to tilt in the Spirits favor and Zahn Werner went coast to coast to cut the deficit to 1. The third period belonged to the Spirit who peppered the Stars netminder but to no avail. A slow start and some bad bounces eventually led to a 3-2 Kirkwood victory. Cooper Pumphrey played well stopping 23 of 26 shots and his shutout streak ended at 4 games, an impressive accomplishment for the first year peewee.

Springfield is now 5-1-2 on the season with league games starting in 1 month.
