Playoff Weekend Ends With Disappointment

By Aaron Dannegger 02/23/2016, 2:15pm CST

Won the first game, Upset in Second

We went into the playoffs in a good position as the #3 seed and having been playing good hockey.  The boys came out firing in the first game of the playoffs beating Meramec in a 4-0 shutout.

However, game 2 against Chesterfield was a different story.  After 16 seconds into the game, we were trailing.  By early in second period we had fallen to a 4-0 deficit. The boys did not quit though and battled back.  With seven minutes remaining in the third period we were within one goal.  Unfortunately, we could never get the fourth goal to tie the game, even with our goalie pulled for two minutes. We outplayed our opponent and outshot them 30-20.

Coach Flaro summed it up well in an e-mail to his Bantam team who suffered a similar fate on Sunday as wel.  Here is an excerptl:

"Losing is never fun, but it is the final life lesson in an otherwise great season.  We could have won that game.  We should have won that game.  It’s not fair.  Well boys, life is sometimes not fair.  The best team doesn’t always win, especially in a 1 and done playoff format.  You won’t always get to play on the team you want.  You won’t always get to play the position you want.  You won’t always get into the school you want, or get the class schedule you want.  You won’t always get the perfect job you want.  And you likely won’t make the money you think you deserve.  True champions do not let a loss get in the way of their quest to be the best.  True champions rise above defeat, dust themselves off, and move on.  Everything in life happens for a reason.  We can dwell on the past, or we can focus on the future."

Time to get ready for next season.......

See you at the rink,

Winter Classic Tournament Weekend

By Aaron Dannegger 02/16/2016, 11:00pm CST

Rough weekend against Tough Competition

This past weekend we played in the KCIC Winter Classic Tournament that featured 3 out of 4 games being played on the outdoor ice.  The tournament lived up to its name as the outside games on Friday and Saturday night were quite cold as the temps didn't leave the 20's.  Sunday's final outside game was much nicer with a balmy 45 degree sunny day.

The hockey competition was tough as we played some A1 teams.  We held our own, but had trouble scoring except in the last game of the weekend.  I guess the boys had been saving up as we beat the Cedar Rapids team 9-1.  The team is primed up and running on all cylinders as we head into the playoff stretch.  We are planning for a long playoff run....time to elevate our game.

It was a tough weekend to be a defender, but Garrett handled it well.  For his efforts, he was awarded the hard hat.  Garrett has been playing solid defense all season long.  He moves and handles the puck well and is a steady smart defender who really is in control of things on the back end.  Great job, Garrett, the hard hat is long overdue for you!

Regular Season Comes to a Close

By Aaron Dannegger 02/08/2016, 9:45am CST

There Were Highs and Lows

We had a four game homestand to close out the regular season this past weekend.  We started off strong against Meramec on Saturday as we jumped out to an early three goal lead.  However, we weren't able to hold on and that lead dwindled as the game went on and ended in a disappointing 4-4 tie.  That carried over to the next game against them later that day where they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and we never recovered.

Sunday brought a new day and the undefeated KC Mavericks to town.  The boys were up to the task as they brought their "A" game and tied KC 3-3 in the first game.  After a brief rest we went back to work and with a late goal by Major we were able to give the Mavericks their first and only loss of the season.

The weekend was probably a pretty good snapshot of our whole season... The boys can play really well and sometimes not so well giving us Highs and Lows all year long.

Cale had a solid weekend in net, especially against Kansas City, and earned the Hard Hat this weekend.

Next up is KC Winter Classic Tournament and then State Playoffs.  Let's keep it rolling!!!!
