::SPRINGFIELD YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Dear SYHA Members:

Although the summer has just started, your SYHA Board is
working hard to insure another fun and rewarding hockey
season begins in just a few months. We appreciate all the effort
and time dedicated by the out-going Board members and we will
continue to press forward with their projects and actions. The
SYHA asks for your help in two matters needing immediate
attention.

First, the elected Board members are about to fill the Board
positions that are appointed: Director of Coaches, Division
Coordinator and Administrator. The responsibilities of these
positions are detailed within the Association By-Laws and can be
found at our website. We have a few interested parents for each
position but wanted to ask again to insure that anyone who
would like to be involved gets an opportunity for consideration
before anyone is selected. You have until JUNE 14th to send a
note of your interest to the Board Secretary, Ginger Jones. Her
email address is  gwj1@sbcglobal.net.  Candidates will be
presented to the entire Board on or around the 16th of June and
selections will be made and voted upon during a scheduled
Board meeting in June. These are important roles within the
organization and we hope you will consider helping us make this
a special season for all of the players. Candidates for Director of
Coaches will be interviewed in an upcoming Board meeting to
provide each candidate an opportunity to meet the Board and
share philosophies and answer questions. The Director of
Coaches will then work with the Board to begin the process of
Head Coach selection. PLEASE NOTE: USAHockey Coach
Certification is NOT a requirement to holding the position of
Director of Coaches. It can be beneficial, but the Association is
looking for someone with excellent communication skills,
administrative skills and the ability to lead and develop the
diverse group of Head Coaches.

Second, SYHA needs help from all members currently to secure
the future of the JVIP.  Since this past December, you have seen
many articles and commentary about JVIP within the pages of
the News-Leader. Although they attempt to provide a balanced
perspective, their formula for issues is based upon quantity of
comments and not the quality or fact-based comments.
Currently, budget challenges and utilization issues have put the
mission and future role of this great facility under question and
public scrutiny.  This facility must exist and thrive in order for our
children to fully enjoy all the positive benefits that ice sports and
hockey provide. We urge all parents not to sit silent but to
respond swiftly and positively whenever a critical opinion or
commentary is written about JVIP.  We must insure a fair and
balanced perspective as our County and City government
leaders discuss its future and its role within the community. The
SYHA Board requests that each family send an email and/or
letter with supportive comments to the News-Leader whenever a
critical or unbalanced article is published. This facility is an
important asset to the community and to each SYHA family.
Without it and the rinks within it, there is no SYHA, no youth
hockey and no skating sports within 100 miles of Springfield.
Please also support and congratulate the Mediacom
naming-rights sponsorship deal that will provide needed
operating resources for the next 10 years.

Your 2008-09 Board looks forward to serving you and your
family this up-coming season. We appreciate your support and
we will work hard to be fair, consistent and transparent in our
decision making. Enjoy the summer and get ready for the best
season ever starting in late August.

Sincerely,
